With a good cruising boat, you can find those "secret spots".

Shacklford Banks

Beaufort — To surf Shackleford Banks, anchor in the Beaufort area and take your dinghy to the area behind Shackleford at 34 deg. 41.7 min. north, and 076 deg. 39.7 min. west. From here you will anchor the dinghy or pull it up on the beach, then walk across the banks and paddle out. This spot features a number of peaks. A small problem is the number of boats speeding by will create wakes that foul the waves at times. While you are in Beaufort, you can use a free van to run errands, etc. Just go to the museum on the main street and sign up. They give you two hours. If you get the vehicle and drive out to Fort Macon, you can check out the waves.
