Witch's Rock and Bahia Portrero — Ollie's Point (Bahia Portrero) is the first spot you come to when sailing down the coast to Costa Rica. The anchorage is in Portrero Grande at 10deg. 50.72min. N, 85 deg. 47.53 min. W. with good protection. The Papagayo winds will blow here, but not as strong as other anchorages in this area. The break is in the northeast part of the bay, a long right with an inside break as well. There is nothing here except jungle.
Witch's Rock is world famous and can get crowded, although it's a beach break with several peaks. Surfers from all over hire lanchas from Playa del Cocos to bring them here. The wind blows offshore and at times, very hard (Papagayo). Great waves here and it can get big. I broke a board here in double overhead conditions. Anchor at Portrero Grande and bring your boat up for surf sessions but don't stay here overnight. Witch's Rock Surf Camp in Playa del Cocos is a good place to hang and get local information and they will take you to Witch's for some bucks.
Tamarindo Area — Brazilito is a nice, fun little reef left in Bahia Brazilito, a couple miles down from Bahia Portero . You can anchor in the south part of the bay and the break is in the upper middle part of the bay. If it's too rolly, anchor in Bahia Portero at 10 deg 26.20min. N, 85 deg. 47.15min. W.
Tamarindo is a rolly anchorage, but the surf makes up for it. Anchor outside of the moorings off the town near 10 deg. 18.27min. N, 85deg. 50.89min. W.. This is a surf town where you can buy and rent boards or get your board repaired. Supplies are available, but the dinghy ride in and out can be challenging. There is a beach break to your left (looking at town) and a reef break to your right.
