With a good cruising boat, you can find those "secret spots".

Panama's Pacific Side

North Islands — Isla Parida has two anchorages, one at Gamez, the other in the south end of Parida, next to Isla Paridita. This south anchorage is very beautiful and close to two surf spots accessable by dinghy. In the pass between the Parida and Paridita there is a reef that breaks with a long right, but it has to be big. Around the corner is Playa Grande, a secret spot where you surf by yourself in a beautiful place with jungle and nature all around.

Mainland — Santa Catalina is a famous wave on a big reef. If it's crowded, move inside and ride the left-overs. Anchor behind the island, a mile from the break. Ask the locals about other spots nearby. Benao is a beach break in a bay. There is a restaurant and some cabinas on the beach in front of the break. Fun wave. The anchorage is behind a small peninsula that turns into an island at low tide. There is a nice house there.

Canal Area — Isla Chepillo is an easy daysail from Panama City. Very few people know about this place. The anchorage is rolly but you'll be glad to get the waves

Panama is a great surf destination for a number of reasons. The waves are great, the people are great, the scenery and anchorages are great and you can stay here for a long time easily. You can experience two different oceans by going through the canal. There is a dry season and a rainy season. It rains here a lot. But there are hundreds of beautiful islands and bays to cruise, and many have waves.
