Tips from an experienced guitar teacher >>>Books, instructional videos, CD-ROMs and websites exist to help you learn to play the guitar,
but they can't listen to your playing and point out ways to improve; they won't answer
your questions or give you advice about playing, song writing, and musicianship. An excellent teacher
you can save you from frustration and disappointment.
Good teachers make sure that you understand your lessons and they care
about your musical growth and development. An experienced and competent teacher will take you way beyond what you can
learn on your own.
>>>It takes time to become a great teacher; an excellent player may or may not be a good teacher.
>>>Private or group lessons? Private lessons focus on you, group lessons focus on the lesson. Beginners and experienced
guitarists can benefit from community college and recreation classes. Students learn from interaction with other students.
>>>All teachers have strengths and weaknesses. Recognize this and seek a teacher or class that focuses on what you want to
learn.
To learn multiple styles of music (like alternative,
classical and fingerstyle) take lessons from more than one teacher. An excellent rock teacher
might not a good classical teacher. If you are a beginner, a well-rounded teacher will help you decide where to focus your
energy.
>>>Excellent teachers are busy and in demand; going rates for good teachers are
between $15-$25 per 1/2 hour private lesson. A good teacher will give you your money's worth.
>>>A teacher can't create a lesson plan for a student until the teacher knows about that student's level of playing, goals,
tastes, and musicianship.
>>>If you are looking for a teacher, contact the guitar societies and music
departments at universities and colleges near you for a referral to
a teacher. Music stores offer lessons, The internet will link you to guitar teachers. This site does that.
Good teachers will want an interview before lessons are committed.
>>>The internet is a good place to find resources that will help you progress. Learn to read music and tablature.
Reading music will take much longer, but will pay off in benefits. How can one become a musician with reading music?
